Episode 109 – All the Dirt on Foster Care and Why You Should Still Do It

We recently were able to participate in the annual Together for Adoption Conference. This episode is based on the breakout session we led there.

We’ve heard a lot of stories about foster care. Sometimes the stories are in the news, sometimes we hear them from people we know, and sometimes strangers volunteer their perspectives. Rather than sweeping the dirt under the rug, we think we should talk about it.

So this episode is our attempt to confront negative stories about foster care experiences. We talk about abusive foster parents, delays in the adoption process, biased social workers and judges, and the pain of getting attached and having to say goodbye.

Come see us in person and enjoy other great speakers at the KidBridge Seminar in Rolling Hills Estates, CA on Saturday, October 29!

  1. I sat and listened to this while folding my children’s laundry (2 children that I adopted a year ago) and this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing this, it helped me a lot as I walk with my older adopted child through her attachment issues. What an incredible message. It is an honor for me to join with God (and you and many others) in keeping children safe! Bless you both!

  2. Hi Tim & Wendy! Your podcasts were formative for me when Johnny & I began to look into fostering several years ago and I recently began catching up on ones I’ve missed since then. We have been caring for 2 beautiful foster lovies for 6 months now, who are hopefully headed for reunification, but of course no one knows what will happen. Recently things have gotten really hard & discouraging. I’ve felt bolstered by listening in again. Thank you so much! Jen, Johnny & Elena, plus X&O

  3. So glad you shared this. Just starting to research about adoption and fostering. I want to share this with my entire family. It’s powerful to love like Jesus.

  4. I haven’t listened to your podcast in over a year…since our last placement moved home. We had been through four placements. I think we as a family, and especially myself, have been struggling with the attachment problem. We have taken a placement again and it’s hard to make the decision to walk into the process again, so I thank you for your reminder of God’s ministry of reconciliation and our calling as Christians. The duct tape illustration was excellent.

  5. Thank you so much for this podcast, it was so helpful! I just found your site and am looking forward to listening to more. We are waiting on our foster license so we are greatful for any information to help us…thank you and God bless your work!! :0)

  6. I share this episode about once a quarter, and it’s the first thing I send people when they are considering Foster Parenting. Thanks for this great resource to inform and inspire.

  7. Ahhh. This was so on point.

Five-ish years after these podcasts were made, I am sitting here listening to them a week before we begin our PATH classes. We are terrified and aren’t sure the journey is for us, but we’ve felt the Spirit lead us to this point. Thanks for these, friends. What an encouragement they are!!!!!!!!!!
